Saladin, the Ayyubid Sultan, is most famously known for his involvement in the Crusades, particularly the conflict between Muslim and Christian forces in the Levant during the 12th century.

One of the earliest military campaigns associated with Saladin was his involvement in the campaign against the Crusader-held city of Aleppo in 1174. This campaign marked one of his initial attempts to expand his influence in the region and challenge the Crusader presence.

However, Saladin's most significant military campaign and his first major confrontation with the Crusaders occurred in 1187. At the Battle of Hattin, Saladin's forces decisively defeated the Crusader army led by King Guy of Lusignan. The battle resulted in the capture of many important Crusader leaders, including Guy of Lusignan himself, and paved the way for Saladin's subsequent capture of Jerusalem.

The capture of Jerusalem in 1187 was a pivotal moment in the history of the Crusades. It marked the end of almost a century of Christian control over the city and triggered the Third Crusade, led by European monarchs such as Richard the Lionheart of England, Philip II of France, and Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.

Saladin's military campaigns during the Crusades were characterized by his strategic brilliance, as well as his reputation for chivalry and respect for his adversaries. His successes in battle and his ability to unite Muslim forces against the Crusaders cemented his legacy as one of the most important figures in Islamic history.
